Your water heater is an essential part of your home. If you have ever experienced a cold shower, or a dishwasher that doesn’t seem to cleanse dishes – chances are, you’ve run out of hot water. This can happen when your water heater gets older, or when it simply runs out of water in the tank. There are several dangers that can result from a failing or aging water heater. These include leaks, flooding, sediment in the water, and loss of hot water. Let’s explore the top three signs that can help you identify whether or not it’s time for a new water heater.
1) The Age of your Water Heater
If you suspect that your water heater is aging, it’s a good idea to start by checking its age. If you live in a condo or apartment complex, you can ask your strata when the water heater was installed. You can also look to when the unit was built and assume it was installed at around the same time. Take the same approach with water heaters installed in residential homes. Determine when the home was built to calculate the age of the water heater. You can also locate the product number on your water heater if you are unsure, and contact the manufacturing company directly to determine its age.
In most cases, if the existing water heater is more than 8 years old, it’s a good idea to start thinking about replacement options. A traditional water heater typically has a life expectancy of 6-8 years. Tankless water heaters can last for far longer, generally lasting between 15-20 years.
2) Odd Sounds
It is considered normal to hear the odd mechanical humming sounds coming from your water heater. However, if you hear loud noises that seem out of the ordinary, such as banging or whistling, it is a sign that things are not running smoothly within your water heating system. Your water heater handles hot gas, and contains a combustion chamber and burner that helps to keep your water warm.
These systems can handle large amounts of pressure, but as they age, they can become less and less effective. Sediment from minerals in the water can also build up within the heater itself. This can cause a reduced level of functionality and it can also cause clunking noises to occur. Strange noises are often an early sign that something is wrong, and your system should be examined by a professional.
3) Water Leaks and Functionality
Obviously regardless of the age if you see any water leaking from the water heater then it is likely it should be assessed by a plumber. Leaks are not always evident, they can be quite minor initially and go unnoticed. A good way to determine whether or not your water heater is leaking is to look at the flooring and area around the bottom of the water heater. If you notice dampness or water lines, chances are you have a minor tank leak.
It is also important to look for rust or debris around the outside of your water heater. The minerals in water can erode the water tank over time and this can lead to rust and leaks. A water leak can be repaired by your plumber and it may not require water heater replacement. However, the situation can worsen quickly and it’s best to call your plumber to get it checked immediately.
