If clean water is escaping from a pipe or fixture, close the appropriate water shutoff valve only if you can reach it safely. If you cannot isolate the fixture, the main water shutoff may stop the supply. Do not force a stuck valve or enter a flooded area to reach one.
If sewage is backing up, stop using toilets, sinks and water-using appliances connected to the affected drainage system. Keep people and pets away from wastewater.
