Hot water tank replacement

When is it Time To Replace My Hot Water Tank?

Whether you have just purchased a new home in Vancouver or you think it might be time for some renovations, it’s a good idea to take your plumbing and heating systems into account. Most older homes in Vancouver were originally built with hot water tanks as the central source of warm water. Old hot water tanks can end up costing you more in energy and gas if they are functioning poorly. It is recommended that you replace your hot water tank every 8-10 years. However, you may also consider switching your hot water tank to a more modern, energy-efficient solution.

Signs You Need a New Hot Water Tank

There are a few telltale signs that it is time to replace your hot water tank. They include cold water, leaks, and signs of rust on the tank.

The Water Runs Cold

Coldwater or inconsistent water temperatures are signs that your hot water tank is aging and becoming less effective. If you experience cold water whether it’s in the shower, the dishwasher or the laundry machine, your plumber can perform a plumbing maintenance check. This may involve turning off the gas or electricity and draining your water heater. It may simply be that certain parts should be replaced, but this is also a sign your water heater is older.

You Notice Leaks

It may be time to replace your hot water tank when you start to notice signs of leaks. A leaky hot water tank is a plumbing emergency, it can cause significant property damage if left unnoticed or unattended. if you do see any of the following signs of leaks, contact your plumber immediately.

  • Water pooling around the base of the hot water tank
  • Stains on the floor or walls
  • Cracks in the floor or molding

Rusted Hot Water Tanks

If you notice problems with your water quality such as clouded water or visible rusty sediment, it’s likely your water tank is starting to rust. This happens over time when natural minerals from the water slowly corrode the tank from the inside.

Rust can eventually lead to holes and leaks in your hot water tank. You can also check for signs of rust from the outside of the tank by simply inspecting the exterior of the tank. If you notice rust forming, it’s time to replace your hot water tank.

Update to a Tankless Water Heater

There are many different water heating and residential heating options out there and one of the popular options for those thinking of switching is the tankless water heater. Tankless water heaters can last for up to 20 years, almost twice as long as regular water tanks. They are also energy efficient and incredibly compact.

If you live in a home with an older water heater, upgrading to a tankless water heater could be an excellent option for you. Tankless water heaters are initially more costly than traditional water tanks, but they last longer and are more energy-efficient. They are a good investment for long term water heating needs.

Benefits of a Tankless Water Heater

  • Saves space
  • Energy efficiency
  • Consistent water temperatures
  • Long-lasting
  • Cost-effective

As mentioned in Natural Resources Canada “An ENERGY STAR certified tankless water heater uses 30% less energy, on average than a storage tank type.” This means that you save money and reduce your environmental footprint when you choose a tankless water heater.
