condensing heating boiler

What is a Condensing Heating Boiler?

Condensing heating boilers are a modern, energy-efficient version of the classic boiler. They are generally fuelled by gas and work to heat water by trapping and condensing hot water vapor; which would otherwise escape and be wasted. The excess vapor is converted to heat the home. There are many different types of condensing heating boilers, they are an excellent option if you are looking to replace or update your current boiler system.

How do Condensing Heating Boilers Work?

Regular boilers work by heating water to a certain temperature and holding it in a large tank until the hot water is needed. Condensing heating boilers heat water on demand when needed. They do not require a large tank-like structure and are excellent space savers.

Condensing Heating Boilers are also able to recycle the water vapor in a special exhaust chamber. They heat water more efficiently and reduce the amount of water vapor that’s wasted. This makes them incredibly energy efficient when compared to the classic boiler.

Here is how it Works:

  1. When you turn on the faucet in your home, the condensing water heater is activated.
  2. Flow sensors gauge the water temperature needed
  3. Immediately, the gas valve is activated
  4. The internal burner lights and heats the water to the desired temperature
  5. The warm water flows to the second heat exchange where excess water vapor is captured and saved.
  6. Hot water flows through the faucet

Condensing systems are incredibly fast and, by heating on demand, they ensure that you will never run out of hot water.

Advantages of the Condensing Heating Boiler

Energy Efficiency

Condensing heating boilers heat your home with less fuel and less waste. That is why they are considered more energy efficient than traditional boilers. Most condensing water heaters have over 90% thermal efficiency.

If your boiler is over 10 years old, chances are it’s only working at 50-55% efficiency. Most condensing water heaters have an energy efficiency rating of 0.90-0.99, which means that they are far more efficient for your home. They also have a life expectancy of 20 years, which means that they are a long-term, energy-efficient solution for your household.

Moreover, Natural Resources Canada recently published a guide to help homeowners make informed decisions while making the switch to more energy-efficient appliances.

It states that in Canada: “Water heating represents 15 to 25 percent of your household energy bill” You can cut costs dramatically by making the switch to an energy star approved condensing water heater. Learn more about how to make your home energy efficient
