FortisBC Maintenance Rebates: Furnace, Boiler & Tankless Guide

See which gas appliances qualify, what the current rebate amounts are and how to protect the 60-day application window.

8 min read Verified August 31, 2026 FortisBC residential gas customers

Regular gas-appliance maintenance can qualify for a FortisBC rebate, but the program does not cover every appliance or every customer. A gas furnace or boiler service currently earns the same rebate category, a tankless water heater has a separate amount, and a conventional storage-tank water heater is excluded.

The application window is short. Homeowners should confirm eligibility before service, keep the paid receipt and apply within 60 days.

Quick answer: As of August 31, 2026, a residential FortisBC gas customer can receive $50 for servicing either one furnace or one boiler, plus $50 for one tankless water heater. Up to two eligible indoor fireplaces can add $25 each, for a maximum appliance-maintenance rebate of $150 per household.

Current FortisBC Appliance Maintenance Rebate Amounts

Eligible service Current rebate Household limit
Furnace or boiler $50 One heating appliance category per household
Tankless water heater $50 One per household
Indoor gas fireplace $25 Up to two per household
Storage-tank water heater Not eligible

The maximum $150 assumes service for either a furnace or boiler, one tankless water heater and two eligible fireplaces. Servicing both a furnace and a boiler does not create two $50 heating rebates under the published household limit.

FortisBC also publishes a separate $50 heat pump service rebate. The customer and contractor requirements should be checked on that program page rather than assumed to match the gas-appliance offer.

Who Is Eligible?

For the gas-appliance maintenance program, the current core requirements are:

  • The applicant must be a residential FortisBC gas customer.
  • Eligible gas equipment must be serviced by a licensed gas contractor.
  • The application must be submitted within 60 days of the service invoice date.
  • The applicant must provide the FortisBC gas account number, email address and scanned paid receipts.
  • A rental or other non-account-holder situation may require a Utility Account Holder Consent form.

Approved rebates are generally applied as a bill credit. If the applicant is not the account holder, FortisBC states that a cheque is sent to the mailing address on the application. Processing may take up to 90 days.

Program amounts and conditions can change. Confirm the live FortisBC appliance maintenance offer before booking solely because of the rebate.

What Should a Furnace Maintenance Visit Address?

The exact checklist depends on the furnace model and manufacturer. A qualified technician may inspect or test:

  • Burner and ignition operation
  • Flame-sensing components
  • Venting and combustion-air path
  • Heat exchanger condition where accessible
  • Blower operation and airflow
  • Filter condition
  • Temperature rise
  • Safety controls
  • Condensate drainage on a condensing furnace
  • Gas connections within the service scope
  • Thermostat response and operating sequence

Maintenance is not the same as a guarantee that no repair will be needed. If inspection finds a failed part, unsafe venting, combustion issue or heat exchanger concern, diagnosis and repair may be a separate scope.

Hillcrest's furnace service page covers repair, maintenance and replacement options without turning a rebate appointment into an automatic sales decision.

What Should Boiler Maintenance Address?

Boilers combine combustion equipment with a water-based distribution system. Depending on the system, a service visit may include review of:

  • Burner, ignition and combustion operation
  • Venting and combustion air
  • System pressure and temperature
  • Expansion tank condition
  • Circulation pumps and zone controls
  • Relief valve and other safety devices
  • Visible leakage or corrosion
  • Condensate drain and neutralizer on a condensing boiler
  • Air in the system
  • Radiator or radiant-zone response
  • Error history and control settings

Low pressure, frequent relief-valve discharge or repeated need to add water can signal a problem that routine maintenance alone will not solve. A professional boiler assessment can separate an adjustment from a leak, expansion issue, failing component or control problem.

What Should Tankless Water Heater Maintenance Address?

A tankless unit heats water through a compact heat exchanger. Minerals, debris, condensate issues and combustion conditions can affect performance. Service may include:

  • Checking inlet screens or filters
  • Flushing or descaling when required by the manufacturer and water conditions
  • Inspecting venting and combustion air
  • Checking condensate drainage on condensing models
  • Reviewing ignition and burner operation
  • Checking accessible water and gas connections
  • Confirming temperature settings and flow response
  • Reviewing error codes and service history

The FortisBC maintenance rebate applies to an eligible tankless water heater, not a conventional storage tank. Hillcrest's tankless water heater service page explains maintenance and repair support for these units.

Maintenance Rebate vs. Repair Rebate

The program is for eligible maintenance service. It should not be described as a promise that FortisBC will reimburse:

  • Replacement parts
  • Emergency repair charges
  • New equipment
  • Storage-tank water heater service
  • Unlicensed work
  • Work without a paid receipt
  • Applications submitted after the deadline

Ask the contractor to itemize maintenance and any additional repair work on the invoice. Clear documentation makes the application easier to review and gives the homeowner a useful equipment record.

A Practical Application Checklist

Before the Appointment

  1. Confirm that the address has an eligible residential FortisBC gas account.
  2. Identify the appliance: furnace, boiler, tankless water heater or eligible indoor fireplace.
  3. Verify that the contractor is licensed for the gas work.
  4. Review the current program amount and terms.
  5. Ask what is included in the maintenance scope.

At the Appointment

  1. Give the technician access to the appliance, thermostat, electrical disconnect and vent termination where needed.
  2. Mention recurring noises, error codes, pressure changes, hot-water fluctuations or shutdowns.
  3. Do not clear stored error codes immediately before the visit; they may help diagnosis.
  4. Ask for unsafe conditions and repair recommendations to be documented separately.

After the Appointment

  1. Obtain a paid, itemized receipt.
  2. Check that the service address, date, contractor and appliance are clear.
  3. Apply online within 60 days.
  4. Save the confirmation and receipt with the appliance file.

Gas and Carbon Monoxide Safety Comes First

A rebate is never a reason to wait when there may be a gas or carbon monoxide hazard.

If you smell rotten eggs or suspect a gas leak, stop what you are doing, go outside and call the FortisBC emergency line at 1-800-663-9911 or 911. Do not operate switches, use a flame or attempt to locate the leak yourself.

If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave the building and follow emergency guidance. Maintenance can reduce risk, but it does not replace working carbon monoxide alarms or an emergency response.

When to Book Service

The manufacturer's manual should guide the maintenance interval. Annual service is common for gas furnaces, boilers and tankless units, but equipment, warranty and operating conditions differ.

Hillcrest can service eligible heating and hot-water equipment and help homeowners keep the documentation needed for a rebate application. Review current Hillcrest rebate information and contact the team to confirm the appliance and requested service before booking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I claim $50 for a furnace and another $50 for a boiler?

Not under the current published household limit. FortisBC lists “furnace or boiler service” as one $50 category, with a maximum of one per household.

Does a hot water tank qualify?

No. The current maintenance offer excludes storage-tank water heaters. An eligible tankless water heater can receive $50.

How long do I have to apply?

The application must be submitted within 60 days of the service invoice date.

Do repair parts qualify for the maintenance rebate?

The program is for eligible service, not a blanket reimbursement of repair parts. Review the current terms and keep maintenance and repair charges clearly documented.

Can a landlord apply?

Eligibility depends on the residential FortisBC account and applicant relationship. If the applicant is not the account holder, FortisBC may require an account-holder consent form.

Is heat pump service included in the $150 gas-appliance rebate?

FortisBC lists heat pump service as a separate $50 offer. Review that program's eligibility requirements independently.

Use the Rebate to Support Planned Maintenance

The rebate is most useful as an incentive to complete maintenance that already makes sense for safe, reliable equipment. Confirm the appliance, use a licensed contractor, obtain a clear receipt and submit the application within 60 days. The small administrative steps matter as much as the appointment itself.
